Universities Urged To Develop Modalities And Criteria For Transfer Of Students

A Research Fellow and Co-ordinator of MPhil (regular) Programmes at Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA) at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Dr Michael Boakye-Yiadom, has called on the authorities of all public universities to develop modalities and criteria for transfer of students from one institution to another.

According to him, it should be possible for a student studying Sociology at the University of Cape Coast to obtain transfer to study the same course at any other public University he or she wishes. He said universities should develop their standards and eligibility criteria for students who wish to come to their school on transfer.

He made this call in an interview with GhCampus.com on the sidelines at the maiden edition of educational Press Briefing organized by Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) which was held at the University of Ghana, Legon campus on the theme: “Enhancing Graduate Students’ Experiences In Ghanaian Tertiary Institutions: Implications For Alumni Relations.”

“The universities would have to come together and agree on the modalities for transfer that these are the criteria for transfer. And again it’s not going to be expensive, it is just a matter of people realizing that this is necessary, this is the way to go, let’s discuss it and let’s come up with the best criteria so whoever qualifies gets it,” he said and added that, “universities who do this make students feel better.”

Responding to our question on a possible pressure the transfer system will put on existing facilities and staff of Universities, Dr Boakye-Yiadom said this rather provides opportunities to Universities to expand and make more profits.

“I don’t see any reason why universities should have concerns about expansion, if you have more students, of course you employ more lecturers, of course you expand your facilities, and you make profits,” he said.
