UPSA SRC Partners Lokhanda To Equip Ladies With Self-Defense Techniques

Following a tragic incident which resulted in a sudden passing of one of their colleagues last year, the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Women Commission of the University Of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) in partnership with Lokhanda, a non-profit organization that focuses on self-defense, is organizing a workshop to train and equip ladies of the school with basic self-defense techniques and mechanisms.
The program which is part of the SRC Women Week celebrations comes off Wednesday, 1st March, 2017 on the school field.
Last year, a level 300 student of the University, Jennifer Attieku was stabbed multiple times in the neck to death by her aggrieved lover and speaking in an interview with GhCampus the SRC Women’s Commissioner, Miss Linda A. Akanjo, who referred to the incident, noted that her friend and course mate could have managed to defend herself and possibly escape if she had basic knowledge in self-defense mechanisms.
“I felt strongly that, at that point in time, if she had a means to defend herself somehow, she could have gotten away and cried for help,” she noted.
Losing a close friend in such a manner informed her decision to partner Lokhanda on this program.
She intimated that the era where women depended on men for protection and security had long passed and it is important for them to have this training.
“I think we are long passed the time where we should expect men to protect us because some of the men right now are not protecting us; they are not protecting women so if we are fighting for equality, we should learn to protect ourselves as well,” she said.
She called on her colleague ladies to come out in their numbers to get themselves equipped with basic techniques they can rely on in difficult situations.
