INSTRUCTION: Answer compulsory question 1 (25 marks) and any other 3 questions (15 marks).
1. (a) (i) Define Rural Community Development in Nigerian context.(2 marks)
(ii) Briefly explain the THREE phases of social change/development, with
particular interest to ability of the society to recover from such changes.
6 marks (2 marks for each phase)
(b) Explain the following approaches to community development;
(i) Rural-Urban Interaction 2.5 marks
(ii) Inter-Sectoral Coordination 2.5 marks
(iii) The Package Approach 2.5 marks
(iv) Community Development 2.5 marks

(c) (i) Describe any three (3) factors that are responsible by settlement patterns in
rural communities of Nigeria. 3 marks
(ii) Briefly explain any four (4) forms of social change in which alterations of
human relationship occur. 4 marks

2. (a) Explain the following micro-approaches to social change theory:
(i) Symbolic Interaction (3 marks)
(ii) Ethno Methodology (3 marks)
(iii) Exchange Theory (3 marks)
(b) Give a brief account of the criticisms of these experiences of social changes in
2(a) above 6 marks 3. Discuss the following rural development programmes in Nigeria;
(i) Family Support Programme (FSP) (5 marks)
(ii) National Accelerated Food Production (NAFP) (5 marks)
(iii) Directorate of Food, Roads and Rural Infrastructure (DFRRI) (5marks)
4. (a) Discuss any five (5) Functional Components of Rural Development in Nigeria

(b) Briefly explain any five (5) basic features of agricultural extension that help in
solving the problems of rural communities in Nigeria.

5. (a) Explain the following two (2) strategies for enhancing the activities of rural
communities in Nigeira;
(i) External Intervention (5 marks)
(ii) Organising Rural Development (5 marks)
(b) State any five (5) basic indicators of rural progress in Nigeria (5 marks)
6. (a) Explain the following macro-approaches to social change theories:
(i) Structural Differentiation Theory (2.5 marks)
(ii) Equilibrium Theory (2.5 marks)
(b) Give a brief account of the benefits of the macro-approaches to social change
theories explained in 6 (a) above. (4 marks)
(c) Briefly discuss any four (4) social indicators to show that a rural society is
developed in sociological perspectives 6 marks (1.5 marks for each)
