COURSE CODE: CIT 891

COURSE TITLE: Advanced Multimedia Technologies

TIME ALLOWED: 2 ½ Hours

INSTRUCTION: Answer any five(5) questions. Each question carries 14 marks.

1. You work at Plus Digital Multimedia. As their manager you are asked to talk about digital and analogue signal conversion: how it is done elaborating on the design of the process (illustrating with diagrams where applicable) (14 Marks)

2. As the multimedia technologist in the company your CEO has requested you to write a summary on the data compression model. Also to advise on implementing/adopting data compression. (Illustrate with diagrams where applicable) (14 Marks)

3. At an interview, the panel asks you to briefly discuss what you understand about digital image processing the steps involved in image processing. (14 Marks)

4. (a.) State the Nyquist s theorem (5 marks)

(b.) In not more than ten lines each, briefly discuss three major system for specifying colours in some standard way which consists of a three dimensional coordinate system and a subspace of that system in which each colour is represented by a single point. (9 Marks)

5. (a.) Briefly define discrete cosine transform (DCT) as relates to Advance Multimedia technologies and discuss its application to JPEG and MPEG (8 Marks)

(b.) Discuss the following (In not more than three lines each):

• Image enhancement (2 Marks)

• Image restoration (2 Marks)

• Image segmentation (2 Marks)

6. (a.) With the use of relevant diagrams briefly discuss “sampling rate” (5 Marks)

(b.) Write short notes on the following picture coding: (9 Marks)

· Intra (I) pictures

· Predicted (P) pictures

· Bidirectional or bidirectionally predicted (B) pictures

7. (a.) Define the term multimedia (2marks)

(b.) List two properties of the two dimensional Fourier transform which are of particular use for image processing (2 marks)

(c.) Draw a well labeled diagram of a typical Still Image Compression Model (6 marks)
