Do you think secure housing units (SHUs) are a good way to reduce gang activity in prisons as well as the influence of gang leaders on outside gang members?

No, the secure housing units was suppose to be a good ideal to house gang members in prison so that they can be isolated from the rest of the prison population. However if all of the major gangs are in the same facility, you will never see a reduction in gang activities. I think the program needs to be evaluated because it’s not effective. Some gang members in the facility never committed any violent act in prison but are still place in the unit because their names are connected to confidential information received from an informant. The unit has no program or opportunities for the inmates the program is over used because of the nearly 70,000 a year for housing one inmate. The housing unit does not reduce the influence gang leaders have in prison activities or on gang members out side of prison.
