Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun Postgraduate Admission Requirement

All candidates seeking admission into the Postgraduate programmes of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, must satisfy the WAEC, NECO or NABTEB ‘O’ Level or ‘A’ Level requirements for Matriculation into First Degree programmes of the University as approved by Senate for the various Departments.

a)    PROGRAMMES IN THE COLLEGE OF SCIENCE

i. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
For admission into the Postgraduate programmes in the College of  Science, candidates must have five Credit passes at not more than two sittings in English Language, Mathematics and two (2) other relevant Science subjects at ‘O’ Level or ’A’ Level passes in two science subjects. Details for the respective departments are as follows:
Department of Chemistry (Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry Options)
Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry,
Physics and any other one from Biology, Agricultural Science,
Computer Studies, Cosmetology or Dying and Bleaching or two ‘A’ Level
passes in Chemistry and any other one from Physics, Mathematics or
Biology (for Chemistry option), or two ‘A’ Level passes in Chemistry and
Mathematics or Biology (for Industrial Chemistry option).
Department of Mathematics and Computer Science:
Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics and
any other two from Computer Studies, Chemistry,
Biology/Agricultural Science or Data Processing/GSM
Maintenance or two ‘A’ Level passes in Mathematics and any other science
subject.
Department of Environmental Management and Toxicology:
Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology,
Chemistry and Physics or a pass in Physics and a credit pass in
Geography, Agricultural Science, Computer Studies/Health
Education, Fisheries/Tourism or two ‘A’ Level passes in Chemistry and
Biology.
Department of Earth Sciences (Geology and Geophysics Options):
Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry,
Physics and any other one from Biology, Geography, Computer
Studies, Agricultural Science, Data Processing/Mining or two ‘A’ Level
passes from Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Geography
(Geology option) or two ‘A’ Level passes in Chemistry and Physics or
Mathematics (Geophysics option).
Department of Physics:    Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry,
Physics and any other one from Biology/Agricultural Science,
Computer Studies, Data Processing, Electrical Installation and
Maintenance Work, Radio, TV and Electrical Work or two ‘A’ Level
passes in Physics and Mathematics.
ii. POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA (PGD)
Candidates with Bachelor’s degree from the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, or any other recognized University must obtain a minimum of Pass degree in the relevant Science discipline. Holders of the Higher National Diploma (HND) from an approved institution must possess a minimum of Upper Credit to be considered for admission.
iii. MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.Sc)
Candidates for Master’s degree programmes must be Bachelor degree holders from the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, or any other recognized University, with a minimum of Second Class degree (Lower Division) in the relevant discipline. Candidates with a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5.0 scale in their PGD programme from a recognized institution shall also be eligible for admission into the Master’s degree programme in the relevant discipline.
iv. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D)
To be eligible for the Ph.D programme of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, a candidate must have academic Master’s degree from any recognized University, and must have a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5.0 scale. In addition, candidates must have demonstrable evidence of intellectual capacity, maturity, effective decision making and problem solving ability.

b)    PROGRAMMES IN THE COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY

i. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
For admission into programmes in the College of Technology, candidates must have five Credit passes at not more than two sittings in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other relevant subject at ‘O’ Level or ‘A’ Level passes in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry. Details for the respective Departments are as follows:
Department of Chemical Engineering:
Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry,
Physics and any other subject from Agricultural Science,
Biology, Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics, Geography,
Economics, Dying and Bleaching/Leather Goods
Manufacturing or ‘A’ Level passes in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry.
Department of Electrical/Electronics Engineering:
Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry,
Physics and any other subject from Agricultural Science,
Biology, Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics, Geography,
Economics, Electrical Installation and Maintenance Work, Auto
Electrical Work or ‘A’ Level passes in Physics, Mathematics and   Chemistry.
Department of Marine Engineering:
Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry,
Physics and any other subject from Agricultural Science,
Biology, Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics, Geography,
Economics, Auto Mechanical Work, Welding and Fabrication,
Air Conditioning and Refrigeration or ‘A’ Level passes in Physics,
Mathematics and Chemistry
Department of Mechanical Engineering:
Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry,
Physics and any other subject from Agricultural Science,
Biology, Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics, Geography,
Economics, Auto Mechanical Work, Welding and Fabrication,
Air Conditioning and Refrigeration or ‘A’ Level passes in Physics,
Mathematics and Chemistry.
Department of Petroleum Engineering:
Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry,
Physics and any other subject from Agricultural Science,
Biology, Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics, Geography,
Economics, Data Processing, Mining, Plumbing and Pipe
Fitting or ‘A’ Level passes in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry.
ii. POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA (PGD)
Candidates with Engineering background who are applying for the PGD programme in the College of Technology must have obtained a minimum of Third Class (Hons) degree or HND (Upper Credit).  However, candidates who obtained HND (Lower Credit) with a minimum of five (5) years post-qualification and relevant experience may be considered for admission.  Candidates with science background who are applying for PGD must have obtained a minimum of Second Class (Hons) degree (Lower Division).
iii. MASTER OF ENGINEERING (M.Eng.)
Candidates for the Master’s degree must be Bachelor’s degree holders from the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, or any other recognized University, with a minimum of Second Class degree (Lower Division) in the relevant discipline. Candidates with a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5.0 scale in their PGD programme from a recognized institution would be eligible for admission into the Master’s degree programme in the relevant discipline.
iv. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
To be eligible for the Ph.D programme of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, , a candidate must have academic Master’s degree from any recognized University, and must have a minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5.0 scale. In addition, candidates must have demonstrable evidence of intellectual capacity, maturity and effective decision making and problem solving ability.


DURATION OF PROGRAMMES

COLLEGE OF SCIENCE

1)    PGD: Minimum of 2 Semesters and Maximum of 4 Semesters for Full-Time Students. For Part-Time Students, Minimum of 4 Semesters and Maximum of 6 Semesters.
2)    M.Sc: Minimum of 3 Semesters and Maximum of 5 Semesters for Full-Time Students. For Part-Time Students Minimum of 5 Semesters and Maximum of 8 Semesters.
3)    Ph.D. Minimum of 6 Semesters and Maximum of 8 Semesters for Full-Time Students. For Part-Time Students, Minimum of 8 Semesters and Maximum of 10 Semesters.

COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY

1)    PGD: Minimum of 4 Semesters and Maximum of 6 Semesters for Full-Time Students. For Part-Time Students, Minimum of 6 Semesters and Maximum of 8 Semesters.
2)    M.Sc: Minimum of 3 Semesters and Maximum of 6 Semesters for Full-Time Students. For Part-Time Students, Minimum of 4 Semesters and Maximum of 8 Semesters.
3)    Ph.D.: Minimum of 6 Semesters and Maximum of 12 Semesters for Full-Time Students. For Part-Time Students, Minimum of 8 Semesters and Maximum of 16 Semesters.
