1. One issue that is important to think about at the beginning of this course is the assertion that is sometimes made that the international law way of understanding the world is actually very Eurocentric. What is asserted is that although the method of international law looks very reasonable and obvious to those trained in the common law or civil law tradition, it is important to be able to see it as something contingent rather than necessary. This means that we have to be able to appreciate that international law is not common sense but a particular way of attempting to deal with international relations and problems. Discuss
