No Salary For GES Newly Recruited Teachers This Year

About Two Thousand Four Hundred teachers recruited into the teaching profession by the Ghana Education Service (GES) will have to wait till next year before their first salaries are paid to them.

The source reliably informed  us that the Controller and Accountant General’s Department has finalized and closed all inputs for the payment of salaries to all public sector workers for the months of November and December without that of the newly recruited teachers.

This came to light after a group of some newly recruited teachers in the Greater Accra region went to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department on Monday, 21st November, 2016 to enquire about their status with regards to their salaries.

The group had earlier stormed the headquarters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Friday, 18th November to protest against the undue delay in the processing of their documents.

This new development has dashed the hopes of many who wished to be paid their first salaries before the end of the year.

The recruitment process began after GES announced that it is receiving applications from interested persons to be recruited to teach English, Mathematics, Science and Geography at the Senior High School (SHS) level across the country.

As required, applicants wrote aptitude tests in English Language and their various areas of specialty after which successful applicants were shortlisted for the various positions.

But three months after they have been recruited and posted to designated schools, they are yet to receive their first salaries. Our checks revealed that these teachers are yet to be assigned Staff ID numbers which according to our source is needed for the processing of public workers’ salaries.

The source added that it is unlikely that they will be paid this year.
