INSTRUCTIONS: Answer four questions in all. Question one is compulsory and it carries 25
marks. Any three is 15 marks each.
TIME ALLOWED: 2.30 hours
1) (a)With relevant examples, explain in detail the concept of tree crops (5 marks)
(b) With examples, mention two types of tree crops that we have in Nigeria (5 marks)
(c) List the importance of tree crops to the Nigerian economy (5 marks)
(d) Explain in detail the under-listed post planting maintenance operations of major
tree crops in Nigeria (5marks)
(i) Qualities of an ideal shade plant for shade management (2 marks)
(ii) Gapping up (3 marks)
2) (a) List the features of ‘Raised bed’ and ‘Sunken bed’ (5 marks)(b) Explain to a farmer preparing to establish a nursery what you consider as a good
seed (5 marks)
(c) Many tree crop nurseries in Nigeria have failed because of poor management.
Mention the essential nursery management practices that will ensure sustainability of
the nursery. (5 marks)
3) (a) List five types of budding and five types of grafting that are important in
nursery operations. (10 marks)
(b) Explain in detail, post grafting and budding cares that are necessary for the success of
your grafting and budding operations. (5 marks)
4) (a) Give justification for the availability of the following materials in the nursery.
(i) Fertile top soil (5 marks)
(ii) Saw dust (5 marks)
(b) Explain the importance of the following field equipment/tool in a nursery
(i) Clearing equipment (2.5 marks)
(ii) Lining up equipment. (2.5 marks)
5) (a) Mention common names of nine (9) Citrus species grown in Nigeria (9 marks)
(b) Mention three major diseases of Citrus that are common in Nigeria. (6 marks)
6) (a) What do you understand by ‘Stooling Plots’ in guava management. (5 marks)
(b) What are your fertilizer recommendations for guava production from year one
to year five? (10 marks)
