Senior lecturer at the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Ghana, Dr. Frederick Vuvor, has stated that drinks consumed after their Best Before (BB) dates could be injurious to the body.
He said BB dates do not only tell the consumer that the drink has outlived its shelf life or the period within which it can maintain its freshness, quality and nutritional value, but also, it’s an indication that after that date, there could be some chemical reaction within the drinke product because the normal product would have been changing to something else that will not serve as source of food or nutrient but rather come and harm the body.
“By that time, by their estimation, injurious chemicals would have be produced in the drink that may cause harm to the body,” he said in an exclusive interview with Thecitizensghana.com.
According to him, the degree of deterioration can only be ascertain through chemical or biological test in the laboratory.
The Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE) honoured some outstanding engineers, non-engineering professionals and organizations for their valuable contributions and extraordinary performance in all aspect of the engineering profession at its third Engineering Excellence Awards 2016 held on Saturday, 12th November, 2016 at the Engineers Centre, Roman Ridge, Accra.
Programmes on the night included a cocktail and networking session to refresh guests who honored their invitation to the event. This session was held after the presentation of awards to deserving candidates.
It was observed that some bottles of drinks served at the event outlived their shelf life period, meaning the drinks were served after their Best Before (BB) dates.

The drinks were served in glasses and so guests could not check the dates before consuming it. More so, the waiters maintained that all drinks must be served in a glass.
It is not clear if the organizers of the event and Sylbeck, the catering service providers on the night were aware that the drinks outlived their shelf life and could pose serious health implications to consumers but still went ahead to serve them.
Dr Vuvor offered that the guests who consumed such drinks at the Engineering Excellence Awards see their Doctors so that he or she can recommend appropriate lab test to be carried on them.
He also advised those in the hospitality industry not to only be looking for money but must make sure that what they give to people to consume is wholesome.
