INSTRUCTION:Answer Any 3 Questions(Your correct use of language elements will earn you additional 3 marks for each question attempted.)
1.     Identify (5 marks) and explain in detail any three very obvious semantic problems in Nigerian English? 15 marks
2.     (a) Discuss the concept of conversational implicature. 10 marks
(b)Identify the four maxims of conversational implicaure and give one examples of each in usage. 10 marks
3.     a.  Outline the four approaches to the study of semantics (8 marks)
b. Looking at the four approaches to the study of semantics, identify two merits and two demerits for each approach, stating why you consider them as such. (12 marks)
4.     State clearly how ambiguity and tautology detract from meaning in the sentence.
5    Read the text below and answer the questions that follow.
Ø  A: Good morning, ma.
Ø  M: I hope you cleaned up your room? (frowning)
Ø  A: But I said I would today, didn’t I? (protesting)
Ø  M: Anyway, make sure your siblings pack their lunch before you leave for school.
i.                    What semantic tool will best help in the interpretation of the conversation above.                                                                                                  (5 marks)
ii.                  Briefly explain how the meaning content of this conversation could be unpacked by applying the identified semantic tool.           (15 marks)
