Voting on hold at Nima Police Station over missing names

Voting has been halted at the Nima Police Station in the Ayawaso East Constituency in Accra following confusion at the polling Centre due to some missing names in the voters’ register. Some of the people who are to cast their votes in the special voting exercise were turned away by officials of the Electoral Commission at the centre on grounds that their names are not in the register.

“Most of the voters here are policemen and they can’t find their name in the register so they are agitated and that is creating confusion here,” 3FM’s correspondent, Karen Dodoo reported Attempts by the electoral officials there to explain matters to the affected voters appears fruitless as our correspondent say they are not ready to listen to excuses because they fear being disenfranchised.

“The presiding officer and agents are trying to explain but they fear since their names are not in the register they could be disenfranchised,” Karen reported She reports that the confusion erupted after 13 people voted, and increasingly people were turned away with the excuse that their names cannot be found in the register.

According to here, those whose names are in the register are being verified but are not allowed to cast their ballot due to the confusion as the officials have left their operation desks to calm nerves. Some senior police officers, she reported, have come around in an attempt to intervene and resolve the issues to allow the processes to continue
